The Most Detailed Dragon Ball Action Figures of 2019

Does anybody need a quick catch-up on the Dragon Ball universe? Sure, it’ll just take a few minutes. Like OVER NINE THOUSAND of them.

Now that we have that out of our system, there’s so much more to Dragon Ball than just an annoying meme that took over the Internet a decade ago. Dragon Ball is a universe so vast and sprawling that you could call it the Star Wars of anime franchises. It has a history going back to 1984. some thirty-five years as of this writing, so forgive us if we leave out a detail or two.

That includes the original Shonen Jump manga from ’84 to ’95, the original anime, the Dragon Ball Z period manga and anime, and the Dragon Ball GT anime series, for a grand total of 519 manga chapters and 508 anime episodes. Plus 3 TV specials, 20 animated films, and the live-action 2009 film Dragonball Evolution, plus several OVAs and offshoot adaptations. Meanwhile, the average Western fan is lucky if they’ve tracked down half of that, since most of the animated films never got a U.S. release.

To recap: Dragon Balls are seven magical artifacts scattered about the Earth, which, once assembled, grant the holder one wish from the dragon Shenron before scattering themselves to hiding places around the world once again. What a pain! These items are quested after by Saiyan, a race of powerful planet-conquering aliens. The first Saiyan to hit Earth was Goku, who was sent to conquer Earth but had amnesia upon landing and decided to befriend the human race and settle on Earth instead. Eventually other Saiyan came to check up on him and all martial-arts-fighting hell has broken loose ever since. In fact, the Saiyan aren’t even the only race of martial-arts-fighting aliens, nor are they the only ones who know about Dragon Balls, and Earth isn’t the only planet with a set of Dragon Balls either.

There’s no way to overstate the Dragon Ball universe’s influence on modern anime culture. It’s the biggest manga series in Japan, it single-handedly popularized manga and anime in the west, and the series’ universe is still going strong with future continuations in the works. It has expanded into thousands of characters, including generations of them with sons fighting to preserve their father’s honor and such, villains who later become hero’s allies, and several spin-offs besides.

So, we’ll try to keep who’s-who straight as we explore the best Dragon Ball figures we can ferret out. And lord knows, keeping the whole series straight is beyond even some of the more devoted fans!

This is Goku in all his battle-raged glory! Guko, while a reckless and passionate character, is the main hero of the Dragon Ball universe, and this figure expresses his might majestically!

Krillin is the beloved sidekick to Goku throughout the Dragon Ball series. Introduced early on, the plucky, if somewhat underwhelming, comic sidekick is best known to the fanbase for dying – but this is Dragon Ball, so death lasts only as long as somebody who misses you doesn’t have the Dragon Balls to bring you back. This figure captures him in all his fierce glory.

The Great Saiyaman is the cheesy superhero alter ego of Son Gohan, son of Goku and Chi-Chi, and one of the strongest characters of the series. After attaining Super Saiyan status – and then some – Gohan adopts the superhero gig to help cloak his identity. He’s a staple of the core cast right alongside Goku, and this figure shows him at one of his many highlights.

We just had to get a second Broly figure on this list because he’s always so impressive. Broly, the big muscle of the series, has strength to make up for not always being the sharpest knife in the drawer. Always at maximum power, Broly is the Hulk of the Dragon Ball universe, and yet his name is a Japanese pun on broccoli.
