Warhammer 40k Mins for the New Collector

Welcome to the world of Warhammer 40,000! Known commonly as “Warhammer 40K,” “WH40K,” or even just “40K,” it’s one of the most popular miniature games in the world, first produced by Games Workshop in 1987. there were earlier iterations of the Warhammer franchise, but 40K is the one that really took off and has been the flagship game of miniature wargamers ever since.

Warhammer 40K sets itself apart from other miniature battle simulators by not being anchored to a historic timeline, being a science fiction scenario set in the future, and by having a pretty grim backstory. It’s basically a galactic battle free-for-all set in a universe ruled entirely by fanatical despots, while tossing in the fantasy kitchen sink. So no wonder it’s a popular battle simulator – you can have just about anything fighting just about anything else.

It’s a future where the history of humanity’s war units, aliens, and even fantasy creatures collide, sometimes even literally speaking. It allows for plenty of variety, since there’s a dozen or so factions and numerous sub-strategies to play out against each other. The game can feel kind of like a large-scale World of Warcraft, or perhaps a smaller-scale Dungeons & Dragons.

But one thing this game does require is pieces, and a fairly deep time investment. Most miniatures you can buy will require painting and assembly. The arts-n-crafts aspect of the game is one of the draws, as players can express themselves in assembling their army, from choosing a race / species to picking a faction to deciding an attack strategy to decorating their units’ armor.

You’ll also need the main rule book, a supplemental guide codex for your own faction’s operations, a tape measure (it figures into the game’s action), the board (measures six feet by four feet), dice, objective cards, and templates (small plastic pieces to find angles from a point). Some of this can be shared in a gaming group; your opponent might have their own board already, for instance.

And beyond the basics, there’s a host of miniature props that are optional, but make the game board state much more clear, such as plastic flames to designate when a unit is on fire or a marker to show a unit is immobilized. On top of that, many players like having some terrain or buildings scattered around, but this is an aesthetic choice which many find handily met by old model railroad scenery props, for instance. Hey, it’s your game, you can build Lego castles if you want!

So while the game has a higher barrier to entry than most – say, golf might be harder to pick up but just barely – it’s a very deep and rewarding hobby. It’s even possible to go pro ranks and join tournaments, or turn a small profit in commissions if you get really good at painting miniatures.

Now buckle up and browse this selection of miniature sets, each of them being economical one-box solutions to give you a viable starting army. There’s no turning back now!
